Open to chat
Staying safe
Open to chat is for saying hello to people at the same café: sharing a table, swapping recommendations, making a friend in a new city. Here's how it's built to keep that comfortable.
How it works
- It's off unless you turn it on, and only while you're checked in at a café.
- Only people checked in at the same café who are also open to chat can see you.
- Anyone there can wave, but nobody can message you unless you wave back. One-sided messages aren't possible.
- Chats close when either of you checks out (check-ins last two hours).
- You must be 18 or over to use it.
Your tools
- Block hides you from each other everywhere, immediately. They aren't told.
- Report sends us what happened and the recent messages between you. We review every report and remove people who break these rules.
- You can turn Open to chat off, or check out, at any time.
Good sense
- Keep meeting in the café or another public place.
- Don't share your address, workplace or financial details with someone you've just met.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave, and tell café staff.
- If you're in danger, call 999. For non-emergencies, call 101.
Not allowed
Harassment, sexual or explicit messages, hate, threats, selling or spam, pressuring someone to meet elsewhere, or anyone under 18. Breaking these gets your account removed.
